Three years ago I hurt my knee at Zumba. It was pretty bad, and when I went to the doctor she told me it would take a while to heal because of the severity of the sprain and because “you’re getting to that age”. Ahem. Anyway, I had no idea that three years later my knee would still swell and ache if I danced, hiked, or even walked on it for a considerable length of time. But, I missed exercising. What to do? I figured water aerobics was a good plan, so a friend and I decided to hit the pool three times a week.
The exercise is great, but what I really love about water aerobics are the ladies in our class. My friend and I are the youngest ones there by decades. Our pool is right next to a senior living community, and 9am seems to be a perfect time both for us to get our kids off to school and for the seniors to make their way to the pool.
These ladies are the best– they’re funny, encouraging, and real. They don’t care what they look like in bathing suits. They notice if we miss a day. They think I’m toned (“You don’t have saggy arms like the rest of us!”) and that I don’t look old enough to have a teenager. You guys. Everyone needs fifty ladies who have already done your phase of life and who are there to be your friends and your cheerleaders. Water aerobics is good for my body and great for my soul.
