Parenting First

Last week my 12 year old fractured his ankle.  He wasn’t doing anything crazy, just landed on it the wrong way.  It threw our normal routine off a bit, but he’s handling it like a champ.  And I have now had a child with a broken bone. Fingers crossed that’s a one time hit.

Resolve

A friend of mine recently told me about her husband’s New Year resolution last year.  Years of misunderstanding and hurt feelings had created a distance between him and his sister.  They hardly communicated and each year grew farther apart, less interested in being a part of one another’s lives.  Realizing that his was something that needed to change, her husband made a resolution to call his sister every day during 2016.  It wasn’t easy, and perhaps awkward at first, but he persisted.  By Thanksgiving the relationship had changed, and grown into one of sibling fondness.  His sister and her family came to visit for a week– something that had never happened in their adult lives.

As I’ve pondered this story I thought about the importance of change.  I’ve considered how focusing on things that really matter can not only change us for the better, but have a positive impact on others as well.  So this year I encourage you to make resolutions that are meaningful.  Instead of aiming to lose 10 lbs (for how many years in a row?) choose to mend a relationship.  Instead of vowing not to eat sugar  (but knowing you’ll fail after the first two weeks), focus on patience and kindness.  Choose something meaningful for you– grow as a person, and bless those around you.

Bombed it!

Recently my daughter announced that she totally bombed a quiz at school.  Alarmed, I asked what had gone wrong.  “What do you mean?” she replied. “I bombed it– I did really well.” After a moment of confusion I explained that while being “the bomb” is good, bombing a test or quiz means doing poorly.  She said that explained the strange responses she gets from her friends when she says that at school.  Lesson learned.

This mama-to-be was the bomb, and in no way bombed her maternity session
